How to not just Survive but THRIVE this Holiday season or
“How to make your new years resolutions less harsh!”

1. Eat first!
At every good party and gathering lies a food table…but starving yourself before an event like this can mean you overeat.  Instead, eat clean all day and have a healthy snack before you leave.  At the party, choose carefully.  If you indulge – make sure it’s worth it!

2. Liquid calories count!
One glass of wine is approx. 100 calories, a mixed drink is double that, and eggnog… well, let’s not go there!  Just because they are liquid, doesn’t mean they don’t count.  Imbibe if you must, but have sparkling water before meals, and between each drink. Drinking impairs you, your diet and your health – enjoy responsibly!

3. Don’t hibernate!
Take your fun outside.  That steaming mug of hot chocolate or glass of mulled wine will taste twice as good after a brisk walk, a day of skiing, or any outdoor activity.  Take the dog and the family, share some laughs and you just burned more calories!

4. Stick to the Plan! (Or at least Plan B)
Strategize!  During the holidays, workouts are the first to get crossed of the list. Give yourself a break but don’t forget that a short workout is better than no workout at all.  Map out your week and plan your meals & workouts ahead!

5. Modify!
Don’t sacrifice your favorite holiday meals just because you’re on a healthy eating plan. Modify! Mashed Potatoes can be made with 1% milk (or better yet with yam not potato!)and it is possible not to marinate the veggies in butter. Chances are, no one will notice the difference (except in their waistline!).
Try a new recipe and create a new tradition!

6. Be picky!
If you must indulge choose carefully!  Save them for when you’re around family & friends (the cat & dog don’t count!).  Exercise portion control by offering smaller servings, using smaller plates, and filling up on the salad and protein first. Watch those sauces and desserts!  Weight gain now is just that – weight gained!

7. Forget the guilt!
Eating the occasional piece of chocolate, a gingerbread cookie or some of your favorite eggnog won’t ruin your nutritional habits for life.  There is something to be said for enjoying life, family and food!

The holidays come once a year, be happy, safe, and enjoy!
